Prediabetes, well you would think you either have type 2 diabetes or you don't! In one way it's true, you don't yet have type 2 but it's certainly trying to catch you. Already changes are going on inside your body and they have been for a time now, probably a couple of years. These changes have affected how your body uses both insulin and sugar.

Blood sugar levels vary through the day, your levels are lower before eating and naturally higher following a meal. Your recent test for fasting blood sugars showing you were prediabetic, would have been between 100 to 125 mg/dl (5.5 to 6.9 mmol/l). Levels higher than 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/l) indicate full blown type 2 diabetes. The impaired or prediabetic range for the glucose tolerance test is between 140 to 199 mg/dl (7.8 to 11 mmol/l).

What does this mean to you?

your pancreas is still making enough insulin but your body is not responding well to insulin's commands
the amount of insulin being produced, be it a normal amount or more, isn't enough to "open the doors" to certain body cells, and the cells have stopped responding to insulin's commands to let blood sugar in

What action should you take?

Diabetes is one of the most dreaded diseases of the current generation. While for some, diabetes may not be as frightening as cancer or brain damage, it can indeed be a grave condition that could affect one's life entirely. People are also not created equal. One's reaction to a certain type of food might be different from another's response. Thus, it might take two bananas to increase the blood sugar significantly for one person, but for another guy, the same increase might happen after just eating one banana. The responsibility of the diabetic patient therefore is to find out how his or her body responds to the fruits being eaten. This can be done by monitoring one's blood sugar levels.

When monitoring one's sugar levels, it is important to be honest regarding the serving sizes one consumes. A very large apple may not count as just one serving, thus it is important to honestly judge whatever amount is taken in. One can then have a blood sugar level test an hour or two after eating fruit to see how high or low the fruit has increased the glucose in the blood. Monitoring is very important for one to know how the body gets fruits in. Once a good understanding regarding the relationship of fruits with one's glucose levels, one can then have pretty much a good knowledge of how little or how big fruit servings should be.

Diabetics can indeed eat fruit, and eating fruits may be a great way for them not only to meet the body's nutritive requirements, but also to manage those sweet cravings. By knowing how the body reacts to the fruits one consumes, one would certainly know how best to enjoy fruits, making help one enjoy life as well.

Diabetics Guide to Non - And Low - Calorie Sweeteners

Although artificial sweeteners like saccharin and cyclamates were in controversy over their safety, some of the newer sweeteners are much safer. Some of the natural choices are even good for you.

One very good choice is Sweet Fiber. It is a combination of xylitol, tagatose, and inulin. Each of these naturally occuring compounds works to produce healthy effects along with adding sweetness.

Xylitol helps to reduce tooth decay rates and is also known to promote a feeling of fullness.

Tagatose behaves like fiber and is almost completely unabsorbed so it has no impact on blood glucose and insulin levels. It also appears to be helpful in raising good HDL cholesterol levels. Tagatose may also reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Inulin is only partly digested by humans. Inulin has also been shown to increase the friendly bacteria in the colon while reducing bad bacteria. Inulin has been shown to suppress appetite, help stabilize blood glucose levels, and maintain high energy levels.

So the combined effects of these three products in one sweetener makes it a very good choice for dibetics and also for preventing diabetes.

Splenda is ok for moderate use because it does not break down when heated, Stevia, also known as Sweetleaf leaves a unpleasant after taste. Nutra Sweet and Equal should be used conservatively. They also lose sweetness when heated.

There you have some choices for your sweet tooth, but remember if you're sweetening up pastry, you also have to account for the carbohydrates.

Diabetes Cure

At this time there is no specific cure for diabetes, but research continues to try to find a way to end this disease, rather than just treating and managing it as is now done. The problem with just treating and controlling diabetes is that it requires constant care, attention, and medications that continue to change over an individual’s life. Many people with diabetes are not treated and may be unaware of the condition. This leads to further complications including kidney disease, circulation problems, cardiovascular disease, vision problems, and elevated heart attack and stroke risk. It is estimated that only a third of all diabetics are treated, the other two thirds are not being treated for the condition.


Research continues to focus on curing, preventing and managing diabetes. While there are significant advancements in managing and preventing diabetes, it is public knowledge and education that allows people to understand the symptoms of diabetes and prediabetes, and start prevention programs. Since many people are unaware of the symptoms, they don’t use the prevention programs. Many school health programs now offer advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle choices that will reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.


In addition to working on prevention and management there is ongoing research to find a cure for diabetes. There are several surgical or medical procedures being tested to cure diabetes, but at this time they are still largely experimental.

Islet cell transplants


Recent advances have been made in the transplantation of islet cells into the body. Islet cells are made up of two types of cells:

* alpha cells, which make glucagon, a hormone that raises the level of glucose in the blood
* beta cells, which make insulin


It is hoped that the production of insulin in the body with this transplant would eliminate the need for daily injections that type 1 diabetes have to do.


The side effects of this transplant include rejection of the cells by the body and reactions to the immunosuppressive drugs. These side effects are very serious and include mouth sores, intestinal disorders, kidney function impairment and increased risk of cancer and other tumors.


Pancreas transplant

This is the full surgical transplant of the complete pancreas. Usually this procedure is only done if the kidneys are being transplanted as well. Again, there are many complications with the procedure, and the side effects of the immunosuppressive drugs may be more dangerous and risky than the continued injection of insulin. There is a fairly high rate of rejection for this procedure, but progress continues to be made.


There is also a process to implant an artificial pancreas, but this is still in the development phase. Many researchers believe that this will prevent rejection problems once the artificial pancreas is perfected.



Genetic manipulation

This cure for diabetes would allow insulin producing cells to be made out of regular cells by inserting the insulin producing gene. This would avoid the need for invasive surgery and would prevent most of the risks associated with surgical procedures.


While at this time there is not a definite cure for diabetes, the research is ongoing. New advances in genetic and medical practices and research will hopefully result in a cure for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the future.

Say Goodbye to High Blood Sugar Levels!

The basis of control of type 2 diabetes really commences with diet. Exercise helps to bring down your blood sugar levels but what you eat is the main controlling factor to bring down your weight, your insulin level, your blood sugars and your cholesterol levels. This will improve control of your type 2 naturally, reducing the need for medications, both oral and insulin-injections.

There are many diabetic diets available, each with conflicting advice. While diet does not replace effective medication, it is the single most important factor overlooked. The correct diet for you leads to much better control of your type 2 diabetes and less medication, which can only give you a better quality of life and reduce the side-effects of drugs.

That said, here are five diet facts to help you:

1. Stick to an effective diabetic diet. This means one based on foods with a low glycemic index (low-GI) ... often referred to as a GI diet. What the glycemic index does is measure the effect of food on raising blood sugar levels. There are several different low-GI diets available, and some are more effective than others. A properly managed one though will bring about:


stable blood sugar levels
lower your insulin-resistance and therefore reduce your need for oral medications
reduce your triglyceride level and improve your HDL, therefore improving your cardiovascular risks

2. A low-GI diet is not the same as a low-carb diet. Both restrict the number of high-GI foods such as bread and pasta but some low-carb diets restrict unrefined vegetable carbohydrates. This is not a good idea unless you plan to add massive vitamin and mineral supplements to your diet.

3. Low-fat/high carbohydrate diets. There are many studies which show how ineffective these diets are on cholesterol levels. The best results showing low blood fats, came from those diabetics who followed the low-GI principle of replacing refined carbohydrates with unrefined carbohydrates.

4. A low-GI diets affects your body's insulin which controls the level of your blood sugars and blood fats. Following this eating plan, insulin-resistance can be lowered reasonably quickly, usually in 10-14 days. As insulin controls fat deposition in your body, it has the added advantage of healthy weight loss also.

5. Constant variations in your blood sugar levels can really only be resolved by lowering your insulin level, which means hypoglycemia doesn't occur and you won't feel weak and irritable. Also you won't feel the need to eat more carbohydrates for energy. Then fat will not be deposited around your waist.

By reducing your intake of refined carbohydrates you reduce your insulin-requirement either from your pancreas or by injection. Eating the correct foods and the correct amount, will improve control over your type 2 diabetes.

Your diet really determines the control of your type 2 diabetes and whether you will live a long healthy life, or an untimely shortened one due to complications. Once you understand what you have to do and why, you will start to control your own health.

New Inhalant Diabetes Medication

Pfizer Global Manufacturing has announced that they are planning to hire almost five hundred new employees and invest up to one hundred and seventy million dollars into the development of their new diabetes drug, Exubera.

The unique factor of this diabetes drug is that it will be inhaled through the mouth, rather than requiring the diabetic to inject the insulin into their body. This will, for all purposes, eliminate the need for needles, one of the more difficult aspects of life for millions of diabetics. Not only are the injections painful, but they are always sources of potential infections. The drug companies and medical professionals have given strong indication that there will be an excellent response to the new form of insulin.

Using Exubera

This drug is a dry powder human insulin that will be taken into the mouth by the use of an inhaler. Users will inhale the medication prior to eating, and whenever else necessary. This is the first inhalable medication for diabetes that will treat both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in adults. The only diabetics that should not use the medication Exubera are those people with existing lung disease. The reason that adults with lung disease will not be able to use the drug is due to the decrease in lung capacity that is noted in individuals during the clinical trials. Most adults report that the inhaler is very simple and easy to use, and can even be used in public. It is small, weighting only about four ounces and it about the size of an eyeglass case.

There is a slight decrease in lung function noted in those individuals participating in the trial studies. This was estimated to be approximately one percent lung capacity lost per year, however the results were reversed when the drug was discontinued. Most humans over the age of 25 lose about the same amount of lung capacity per year regardless of using the drug.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes affects between five to ten percent of all diabetics, and this type of diabetes requires that the individual take insulin to stay alive. These people need to have regular injections throughout their lives, and until now there were few options to get away from this painful routine.

Inhalant insulin will eliminate the need for adults to inject themselves on a daily basis, and will allow them more freedoms and less restrictions due to the conditions that liquid insulin has to be stored under.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetics cannot manufacture or use insulin that is in the body properly, so they require supplements of insulin. It is estimate that between ninety and ninety-five percent of all diabetics fall into this category. It is also estimated that there are over 200 million diabetics worldwide, and the number is only growing every year.
